By Jonathan Baker Despite the uncertain times of today, the nation’s digital economy remains strong. It has, in fact, prospered. How has digital managed to overcome certain economic concerns—and still succeed? The general answer may be summed up in this term: “content creator economy.” Stating the Obvious On the surface, it’s no surprise that content creators and influencers have disrupted the digital economy. This disruption has changed everything from how businesses operate to the way consumers conduct online transactions, among other advances. Going further, or beneath the surface, the impact of this new era in content creation is evident in noteworthy facts, figures, and percentages from the last five years. Statistics that Stand Out—and Apart Referring to a study conducted by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), Media Post observed how the digital economy in the United States has doubled since 2020. In that five-year time frame, digital has earned approximately $4.9 trillion. For added perspective, within the last five years, while the overall economy has grown at 7 percent, the digital economy grew at 19 percent. And the demand and growth in the number of creators—complemented by an increase in Internet-related jobs—accounts for this enormous success in digital. Rapid Rise of Creators Today, the title of “full-time digital creator” applies to 1.5 million professionals throughout the nation—eight times as many as there were five years ago. As clarified by online course provider Coursera, “digital creators” are frequently referred to as “content creators” as they may also be responsible for offline content. Whatever the title, the roles are fundamentally the same. Most importantly, this increase in the number of creators—as well as social media influencers—has extended to the addition of millions of jobs within the digital economy. (Yes, millions.) How Many Millions of Jobs? The Media Post article states there are currently nearly 30 million employees employed in some kind of digital enterprise. Within this total, 11 million jobs are connected to the digital economy. Another 17 million are based in the “digital infrastructure.” This infrastructure encompasses a variety of industries that include banking, retail, and education, among others. And all thanks to content creators. As David Cohen, the CEO of IAB stated: “The creator economy has clearly become a major factor in the digital growth story, driving spend, engagement, culture, and of course, employment.” Contributing to the Content Creator Economy The EGC Group is fully aware of the power of promoting brand visibility through content creation.
