The Big Impact of Small Business Saturday

On the Saturday after Thanksgiving, savvy shoppers will stay local. And this savviness is not based on making the most of great sales. Shoppers “in the know” realize the importance of how Small Business Saturday® contributes to the communities where they reside—and beyond. For those who are not aware of this shopping day’s impact, read on.

Quid Pro Quo

Thanksgiving—the last Thursday in November—is the holiday to give thanks. Consumers should extend this sense of thankfulness to Saturday by visiting and purchasing from one or more close-to-home establishments. Owners and staff members of these local establishments will in turn offer their neighbors a memorable shopping experience. This quid pro quo benefits everyone—shopper and merchant—who participates. And the ripple effect of these benefits continues to spread everywhere.

Thank American Express®

Fifteen years ago, American Express® (AmEx) launched Small Business Saturday to help local establishments stay afloat during the Great Recession. Since then, the mission of this special day that acknowledges neighborhood businesses—from local shops to restaurants, among others—has grown in prestige and practice. Statistics from AmEx conclude that since the inception of Small Business Saturday, over $200 billion have been generated in sales. (For a more immediate perspective, shoppers spent approximately $17 billion on Small Business Saturday-related purchases last year.)

This is indeed a day for local enterprises to celebrate.
